ABOUT
WHITECAP
While driving through the beautiful countryside of Door County on your way to Gills Rock, Europe Bay park or Uncle Tom’s Candy store, you may encounter a large red barn with a 2 acre vineyard to the north and a herd of miniature dairy goats to the south. This is Whitecap Winery of Door County, an artisan winery on the northern most tip of Door County.
Our vineyard is nestled between Lake Michigan and the bay of Green Bay creating grapes for wines from the Wisconsin Ledge AVA region. We are unique in this area because our small batch wine making operation is 100% Estate grown grapes.
We are also unique in that our story begins with a passion for growing grapes and creating an environment in which the grapes selected thrive and grow because of the care put into the soil. The soil is fertilized organically with the compost from our own herd of dairy goats. Our vineyard produces grapes grown using natural methods supporting respect for the land. We make quality wine because we take care of the soil. The dedication for making quality wine comes from this origin and philosophy.
We also have a special connection to this northern most tip of Door County because we have long roots here going back generations. Door County is our heart and our home. Don was raised in a farming family and learned a love for growing things and a respect for the soil at an early age. This passion initiated the planting of the first vines planted on our farm in 2018 and has taken off since then.
We grow 7 varieties of grapes which are also the names given to our wines on the labels. Our reds are Marquette, Petite Pearl, Frontenec. Our whites include Brianna and St.Pepin as well as our two new varietals Itasca and Frontenec Gris. We create a few blends and also a delightful Rosé. Take a look at our “Wines” page for more information.
Whitecap Winery of Door County does not have a tasting room or storefront where our wine can be purchased. We have no employees but we are so grateful for our generous friends, family and neighbors who are willing to help us from time to time, especially during harvest time when you can see us all socializing and enjoying each other's company as we harvest the rows of grapes.
Currently, you can find our wines in many of the local restaurants, wine shops, and stores to purchase. Our goal is to produce wines that are flavorful and to be enjoyed with dinner or just relaxing. We are proud to be able to produce wines whose origin comes from our passion for healthy living and love of our land.
Listed to the right are current locations our wines can be purchased.
